Fees & Commissions

Brokers do charge two kinds of fees, trading and non-trading fees. Just like other brokers, IG fees encompass these categories. In this section of IG review, we will explore the different fees the broker charges.

Trading Fees

Charges incurred during trading are known as trading fees. They are fees clients must pay while performing any trading activity on the broker. They include spreads, commission and overnight funding.

Spreads

IG earns primarily through its spread. Spreads are not fixed, therefore are subject to change during the day. While the broker offers its minimum spread in most conditions, it’s worth noting that spreads will increase as market prices go wider. Spread on forex starts from 0.6 pips on major currency pairs such as EUR/USD, 0.8 pips on major indices and 0.1 pips on commodities.

Commission

The broker charges commissions and the percentage of commission charged depends on the particular market traded. In the case of CFD trading, there are no commissions when trading instruments such as forex, indices and cryptocurrencies. However, trading stock CFD will have commission fees.

Overnight Funding

Overnight funding is the fee payable for holding cash CFD positions through the daily cut-off time. The broker charges an interest adjustment to the client’s account to reflect the cost of funding that position in addition to a small admin fee.

Guaranteed Stops

Guaranteed stops are safe switches. Users can use this feature to protect their position against slippage with a guaranteed stop. It is available only on premium packages where you have to pay a small fee to activate. It is important to note that IG premium fees do change, particularly as weekends and unstable market conditions draw near.

Non-Trading Fees

These are fees incurred when performing non-trading activities. They include the following:.

Deposit and Withdrawal Fees

IG claims to not charge any deposit fees, unless the funding is done with a credit card or making a same-day transfer of less than £100 or equivalent. Although deposit and withdrawal fees vary depending on your country of residence, for instance, funding by card requires a minimum deposit of $50. All other deposits and withdrawals with other methods are free.

Currency Conversion Fee

This broker charges a currency conversion fee of 0.5% on CFDs traded in a currency from an account’s base currency. Although there is an instant conversion of any foreign currency transaction to your base currency. Funding, commission and dividend charges are calculated by that percentage before the account is credited.

Inactivity Fee

While there is normally no fee for IG accounts, an inactivity fee of $12 per month is charged to  accounts that remain inactive for two years. Inactive CFD accounts are charged a fee on the first day of every month if no dealing activity has occurred for a period of 2 or more years. This fee is only charged if funds remain in the account.

Account Documentation Fee

Account documentation fee is a fee charged when trading a US-incorporated stock. Users must file a necessary W-8 or W-9 form prior to the dividend ex-date of a qualifying trade when trading US-incorporated stocks.
